WordPress 3.6 Site Speed Optimization Tweaks and Tips

It is easy, just get a great host like Joe AKA  wpmu-hosting.org/mark and you are all set to go for WordPress 3.6 site speed optimization.

Now, let me tell you some secrets about the way I tweaked his hosting a tad. It must work on most of the great hosts running wordpress 3.6. No harm in giving it a try.

1) wp-config.php

define('WP_POST_REVISIONS', 3);
define('WP_DEBUG', false);
define('WP_MEMORY_LIMIT', '128M');
define('WP_MAX_MEMORY_LIMIT', '256M');

2) .htaccess

AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE text/html text/xml text/css text/plain
AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE image/svg+xml application/xhtml+xml application/xml
AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE application/rdf+xml application/rss+xml application/atom+xml
AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE text/javascript application/javascript application/x-javascript
AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE application/x-font-ttf application/x-font-otf
AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE font/truetype font/opentype

3) Now, the most important step and quite possible that many host will not allow you to edit php.ini. Give it a try, if your host allows

zlib.output_compression = on
memory_limit = 512M
max_execution_time = 240
max_input_time = 120

4) Now, let us add some plugins to WordPress 3.6 site speed optimization

4.1) WP-Optimize – http://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-optimize/ Rock Star Rating
4.2) Quick Cache – http://wordpress.org/plugins/quick-cache/ Rock Star Rating
4.3) Cache Images – http://wordpress.org/plugins/cache-images/ Rock Star Rating
4.4) All in One SEO Pack – http://wordpress.org/plugins/all-in-one-seo-pack/ Rock Star Rating

Now after tweaking them a tad, “Well , I can not give all my tricks away!”

Lets do some super tests and see if all the cool tweaks did worked in our favour towards achieving WordPress 3.6 site speed optimization.

WordPress Site Speed Expert, Speeding up WordPress sites across the Globe

I am the fuel behind the high speed of innumerable fast running wordpress websites hosted either on a cheap server or a dedicated server.
Today, Speed is a matter of great concern, and I don't only optimize but re-energize. I am also a lifetime WPMU Dev member.

One of the largest free blogging websites BlogLines in South Africa is my baby. I not only conceived the idea of free blogging in South Africa, but also implemented it with an objective of adding a new dimension to the world of free blogging. Blogging helps us in enhancing the quality of our social life by transforming the ways in which we share our ideas and opinions with each other. South Africa blogging environment has never been so easy and user-friendly as it is today.

I have practised and learned all the technical aspects related to WordPress. In the past couple of years, I have developed a wide range of websites using WordPress, WordPress MU and now using the latest WordPress MultiSite.

I am the WordPress Speed Energizer Wiz, and I am always hunting around to find slow running websites. I know, these websites need me in order to live a long and healthy life.
Only the wordpress sites powered with speed, capable of running at full throttle are going to survive in this tough and competitive world of Internet.

    @mark Amazing great work
    I did http://www.3alienswebhosting.com and with out any cache or Cloudflare I was getting 3.23
    and with Quick Cache and Cloudflare I’m getting
    Tested from Dallas, Texas, USA on September 20 at 09:08:38

    Page size
    1.0MB
    Load time
    1.26s
    Requests
    83
    Perf. grade
    82/100
    and http://gtmetrix.com
    Page load time: 1.60s
    Total page size: 853KB
    Total number of requests: 38
    Page Speed Grade: (79%) C
    YSlow Grade: (76%)

    Next I’m going to do one of my w3 total cache site with CloudFront CDN Benchmark that and then convert it over to your setup and post the results.
    Presently I’m getting a lot of Core.xxxx files in some my sites ever once in a while and Have to figure out whats causing it. So switching to a different cache and CDN and speed you the server would be a Plus Plus

    I also have a dedicated server with Joe and I have to say the Best Host and support staff I have ever been with and I have been with a Lot :>
    As the terminator said I’ll Be BACK! :>

    @n2rga see this posts at the bottom http://markdescande.wpengine.com/tweakingwordpress-3-6-1/ i drop some tricks at the bottom

    working on my blog directory site and found that Cache Images Plugin is not working it will not scan also it seems the author has not updated the plugin in over 2 years as noted on the plugin section of wordpress and has not answered support questions. I looked for a replacement didn’t find one

    I got quick cache and Cloudflare CDN installed
    installed the settings that are required into config and htaccess files
    got these results
    pingdom load time no cache no Cloudfront or cloudflare 5.19s
    pingdom load time w3 total cache and cloudfront CDN 3.22s
    pingdom load time quick cache and Cloudflare 3.15s

    CTMetircs load time no cache no Cloudfront or cloudflare 7.63s
    CTMetircs load time w3 total cache and cloudfront CDN 6.89s
    CTMetircs load time quick cache and Cloudflare 6.49s

    Going to keep cloudflare and Quick Cache since its free not that the $1 or $2 Cloundfront costs me each month breaks me but that it does just as good and its free and quick cache is not as Bloated as w3 total cache
    Did I say I love Free :>

    If you have any suggestions on how to speed up the site please tell.

    @Mark when I installed the header tweek from the other thread it gave a 500 error
    I did a little research on it and this works for me

    ExpiresActive On
    ExpiresByType image/jpg “access plus 1 year”
    ExpiresByType image/jpeg “access plus 1 year”
    ExpiresByType image/gif “access plus 1 year”
    ExpiresByType image/png “access plus 1 year”
    ExpiresByType text/css “access plus 1 month”
    ExpiresByType application/pdf “access plus 1 month”
    ExpiresByType text/x-javascript “access plus 1 month”
    ExpiresByType application/x-shockwave-flash “access plus 1 month”
    ExpiresByType image/x-icon “access plus 1 year”
    ExpiresDefault “access plus 2 days”

    onlu difference between the two it adds [ plus ]

  14. Mark de Scande
    Mark de Scande09-20-2013

    Interesting ps did you add that to your .htaccess

    The only thing i can think off is that “IfModule” statement is not allowed on the server server up

    Bottom line is each server is a item on its own :)

  15. n2rga
    n2rga09-20-2013

    yes added to .htaccess
    All my sites are converted to quick cache and cloudflare except the two multisites, those I will hold off on
    thank you so much your setting help greatly
